Class Description:

In this free demo, painting instructor Garin Baker walks you through the process of creating a portrait in charcoal, beginning with a blank page and using a photographic reference to teach you how to create line, texture, light, shadow, shading, and more. This lesson will help you gain insight into creating portraits in any medium. With this short demonstration, you'll get a sense of what it's like to take a class on e-telier™, The Art Students League's platform for atelier-style virtual classes in drawing, painting, sculpting, mixed media, printmaking, and more.

About the Instructor:

Born in 1961 in New York City, Garin Baker received his BFA in Painting and Art History at Pratt Institute, with additional studies at The Art Students League. A traditional figurative artist and plein air painter, Baker has had a long career as a professional artist with an impressive list of commissions and sales. He’s also nationally recognized for his largescale public art mural commissions for municipal, private, and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. He has been the subject of several features in American Artist and Plein Air Magazine. Mr. Baker has won several first place and grand prize awards including Plein Air Easton, Brandywine, PA and the prestigious Irvine Museum Award.
